Cold Weather Preparation

In response to frigid temperatures, the Bethlehem Water Department encourages homeowners to take steps to protect their water pipes from freezing which can result in loss of water service, pipe breaks, and damaged water meters.

Tips to prevent frozen pipes:

  • Keep indoor temperatures steady day and night (above 55°F)
  • Open cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach pipes under sinks or hidden closets/crawl spaces
  • Insulate pipes and meters located in unheated areas with foam insulation or heat tape
  • Let cold water drip from faucets to keep water moving to prevent freezing
  • Seal cracks and joints in spaces where cold air can enter around exposed plumbing
  • Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses and faucets
  • Turn off main water shut-off valve to the house if left vacant or unattended for some time

It is important that you know where the main shut-off valve is located in case of a pipe burst inside the home.  It is typically located near the water meter in a basement or crawl space or exterior closet.
