Lead Service Lines Mailer
Thursday, November 14, 2024
In accordance with USEPA regulations on lead service lines, the City mailed letters to all 37,000 water customers advising them of the status of their water service line and to request assistance from the public to identify the pipe material of the water line entering their house if it is listed as “Lead Status Unknown.” Customers are advised to visit the lead service line link on the City web-site:
https://www.bethlehem-pa.gov/Water-Sewer-Resources/Public-Information/Lead-Service-Lines for more information and review the
Service Line Inventory Map for their location. Customers can follow the instructions on the website to identify their service line material and send the information to the City using the form provided on the website.
Be advised that the vast majority of service lines in the City water system are of unknown material. This does not mean that customers have a lead service and it does not mean that there is an increase of lead in your drinking water, even if you do have a lead service line. The City adds a corrosion inhibitor to the water to help prevent lead from leaching into the water from the pipes. Our testing has shown that this practice is effective at keeping lead out of the drinking water. If your service line is lead or galvanized requiring replacement, we will work with you to replace it in our upcoming lead service line replacement program. At this point, we are only collecting information on service line material. This notification will occur annually until all lead services have been replaced by the City.
