Current certification through the state of Pennsylvania in commercial building plans examination, commercial building inspector, accessibility plans examiner/inspector required and commercial energy plans examiner preferred. Considerable responsible experience in building construction plans examination and inspection work, and completion of a standard high school course; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. -
Must pass a criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, and drug test. -
A Commercial Building Plan Examiner is responsible for seeing that plans, specifications and buildings in the process of construction meet all requirements of relevant codes, standards, specifications and ordinances; inspects construction documents to ensure compliance with International Code Council, Uniform Construction Code and ANSI standards; ability to communicate both written and orally to design professionals regarding submitted plans; reviews new or difficult construction issues with the Chief Building Inspector and licensed designed professionals as required; regularly exercises technical judgment and discretion based on familiarity with the various construction ordinances and regulations for which he/she is responsible for enforcing; reports to the Chief Building Inspector. -
Examines plans to enforce conformance to building, safety and zoning codes, plans, specifications and standards, inspects residential, commercial, industrial and other buildings during and after construction to ensure that components meet provisions of building, safety and zoning codes; issues notice for corrections, interprets code requirements and recommends compliance procedures to contractors, builders, designers and owners; maintains inspection and plan review records; reviews plans for buildings for compliance with regulations and issues building permits; advises builder and the public concerning building regulations; inspectors may be responsible to cover each other’s responsibilities during absences as required by the Chief Building Inspector; informs owner of the inspection findings and conditions which must be corrected. -
Thorough knowledge of the building trade and applicable codes and standards including municipal building and zoning ordinances; ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints; excellent communication and customer service skills. -
