Emergency Management is defined as the judicious planning, assignment and coordination of all available resources in an integrated program of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery for emergencies of any kind. This includes whether from an attack, a man-made event or a natural disaster.
Thus, Emergency Management is the organization and management of the resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies ie: preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery). The aim is to reduce the harmful effects of any major public safety issue.
The goal of Emergency Management through preparedness is to lessen the impact of disasters or major public safety events on vulnerable populations, to ready an organization by preparedness for an influx of activity, and to design a coordinated plan that reduces waste and errors, coordination of services and provides all necessary public safety services to the event and rest of the community. Simply stated, Emergency Management is about “BEING PREPARED.”
The City of Bethlehem Emergency Management Department oversees all emergency management issues in the City. It is also a liason between all City Public Safety agencies and Northampton County 911 and Emergency Management. City Emergency Management is responsible for all radio communications in the City and all public safety city and partnership surveillance cameras. The City of Bethlehem Emergency Management Department is located in the Bethlehem Police Department, 10 E. Church Street, Bethlehem, Pa. 18018.
Emergency Operations Center (EOC)
In the event of an impending emergency or disaster, the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in the Police Department will be activated. The purpose of the EOC is to manage the emergency response and coordinate the distribution of resources to a disaster incident. The City’s EOC, depending on the size of the incident or emergency, will work with County, State and Federal Emergency Management agencies.
