The Community Patrol Division is comprised
of 4 platoons. Three of these platoons work day shifts (7
a.m.- 3 p.m.) and middle shifts (3 p.m.- 11 p.m.). A fourth
platoon is divided into three squads, and they work a steady
night shift schedule (11 p.m. - 7 a.m.).
The Community Patrol Division (the backbone
of our organization) is responsible for the following functions:
Protection
of life and property, preservation of the peace, enforcement
of laws and suppression of crime.
Provide residents and businesses with a highly
visible and proactive
police presence by routine preventive patrolling on foot,
bicycle, (BPD officers patrolling on police mountain bikes
allows them to be in closer contact with the citizens, and
also allows them to see and hear things they otherwise might
not be able to sense while in a cruiser) or motor vehicle.

In 2009 Community Patrol officers handled approximately
55,000 calls for service. Here are some examples of how many
calls that were handled by officers-
