The City of Bethlehem's Department of Water and Sewer Resources
provides retail and wholesale water and sewer services to
customers in the City of Bethlehem and outlying municipalities.
The following activities are performed by the department:
watershed and reservoir management; water treatment plant
operation and maintenance; water laboratory; customer service;
technical service; transmission, storage tank, pumping, and
distribution line operation and maintenance; engineering;
meter shop; sewer line and lift station operation and maintenance;
wastewater laboratory; wastewater treatment plant operation
and maintenance; and an industrial pretreatment program.
The City of Bethlehem's water service area includes all
of the City of Bethlehem, the Borough of Fountain Hill, the
Borough of Freemansburg and portions of Allen Township, Bethlehem
Township, East Allen Township, Hanover Township - Lehigh County,
Hanover Township - Northampton County, Lower Saucon Township,
Salisbury Township, and Upper Saucon Township. The city's
water comes entirely from surface sources and is stored in
reservoirs in the Pocono Mountains. Water is treated at a
state-of-the-art direct filtration plant built in 1994 and
then is distributed through more than 500 miles of water lines.
The system brings high-quality water to more than 100,000
customers with more than 34,000 water accounts (residential,
industrial, commercial, institution, public, and resale).
The City of Bethlehem's sewer service area includes all
of the City of Bethlehem, the Borough of Fountain Hill, the
Borough of Freemansburg, Hanover Township - Northampton County,
the Borough of Hellertown and portions of Bethlehem Township,
Hanover Township - Lehigh County, Lower Saucon Township, Salisbury
Township, and the City of Allentown. The City of Bethlehem
owns, operates, and maintains a wastewater collection and
conveyance system and a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).
Conveyance facilities include approximately 208 miles of gravity
sewer lines and the city maintains 46.3 miles of sewer lines
in Hanover Township - Northampton County. The population served
by the City's WWTP is more than 115,000 with over 25,000 sewer
accounts.
